Abstract

The development of digital technology has facilitated the emergence of online financial services, including online loans. However, this ease of access has also led to new challenges, notably the rise of illegal online loans. This study aims to analyze the negative impacts of illegal online loans on students of the Language Department at Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis, representing the younger generation in a cashless society. The study focuses on analyzing the psychological impacts, such as stress and anxiety; financial impacts, such as debt traps; and social impacts, such as the deterioration of interpersonal relationships that students may experience as a result of engaging with illegal online loans. Through in-depth qualitative analysis using a case study method, this research seeks to identify patterns in students' experiences and formulate recommendations for mitigation strategies and interventions that could be implemented by the university and regulators. This study provides in-depth insights into the risks and consequences of illegal online loans, particularly among students, and offers a foundation for policymaking and improving practices in the digital financial sector. Research Methodology: This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 30 respondents selected via purposive sampling and document analysis related to online loan practices. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis techniques. Results: The findings indicate that illegal online loans have psychological impacts, such as stress and anxiety, financial impacts in the form of debt traps, and social impacts that harm students' interpersonal relationships. These results highlight the need for stricter regulations and more intensive financial education among students. Conclusion: This study underscores that while financial digitalization provides easier access to financial services, it also opens the door to misuse in the form of illegal online loans. Collaboration between educational institutions, regulators, and the community is needed to address this issue.
