Abstract

Based on data from Statistics Indonesia in 2015, there are 952 Ha of Pinang plant areas that have been harvested. Seeds and stems have been utilized while the shell only becomes organic waste. The manufacture of particle board made of Pinang shell and combined with mahang wood powder (low quality wood) was expected to fulfill the existing industry standardization. This research was conducted to obtain the method of processing pinang shell waste and mahang wood powder to become particle board and the effect on the physical and mechanical properties based on JIS A 5908-2003 or SNI 03-2105-2006.Three types of particle board have been created with weight ratio between Pinang shell (P) and mahang wood powder(S)i.e. P1S4, P2S3 and P3S2. The adhesive used was the urea formaldehyde adhesive (UF). The experimental of physical properties were water content, density, adding thickness and water absorption, while mechanical testing were modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR). The result of physical properties showed has met JIS A 5908 2003 and SNI 03-2105-2006, but the mechanical properties have not met the standard. The particle board with variations 2:3 (P2S3) was the best quality particle board of the three variations.
